If you are considering a standard poodle or are just beginning to look at standard poodle puppies, here are some tips that can make your experience easier.

1. Ask a LOT of questions! a good breeder doesn’t mind this, and usually welcomes it. It means you are doing your research, and want to go in with realistic expectations. A good breeder wants to find a match for your specific family, NOT just to sell you a puppy. A good breeder will pass up selling you a dog before knowingly giving you a poor match.
2. Be aware that many good breeders keep waiting lists. Sometimes it is worth waiting for the right pup!
3. Realize that the standard poodle is not a cheap dog to maintain. Grooming alone costs a lot. Unless you are willing to learn yourself, you have to take a trip to the groomer every 6-8 weeks, with brushing in between. Generally, standards are healthy, so it is your job to maintain his health as best you can for the duration of your puppy’s life.
